Weidmuller Overvoltage Protection (OVP)

Weidmüller's PU I series of Class I overvoltage protectors with varistor technology, offers a discharge capacity of 12.5 kA (10/350 µs). The pluggable, self-monitoring surge voltage arresters are optionally available as 1-, 3-, or 4-pole versions and with optional remote signalling contacts. PU I devices can be rotated through 180° to simplify installation to the RCD device with cross-connecting combs.

Weidmuller This facilitates short-length PE connections. The PU I Series is distinguished by an extensive palette of product characteristics. For instance, a colour-coding system indicates 'degradation' of the surge arrester. The surge voltage arresters are suitable for different earthing systems (TN/TT) and are tested to IEC 61643-1 and EN 61643-11. Designed for use in buildings classified in lightning protection zones III/IV, all PU I devices are simple to install in sub-distribution boards and electrical cabinets. Another very positive feature: the new PU I does not require decoupling to the following Class II and Class III arresters, a cost-saving benefit from which the customer profits. With its low residual voltage of <1.3 kV the PU I can also be utilised for Class II overvoltage protection. All PU I devices are suitable for use in buildings classified in lightning protection zones III/IV - for example in hotels, libraries or public swimming baths.

Chalmit Sterling II Release

Chalmit have recently completed a redesign project on the Sterling range of products, primarily on the Exn Zone 2 version but also on the industrial version.

These changes have been brought about by updates in the IEC 60079-15 standard covering equipment used in Zone 2 areas. Chalmit have also taken advantage of new developments in the design of high frequency ballasts. The following changes have been introduced into our Sterling II product range: Zone 2 Version 1. A new stronger enclosure (diffuser and body). 2. A new custom made high frequency ballast which meets the requirements of IEC 60079-15, without the need for secondary protection. Although not a requirement of the Zone 2 standard, this ballast also has EOL protection circuitry built in which complies with the Exe standard IEC 60079-7. Our original ballast in the Exn Sterling was an industrial HF ballast housed in an aluminium extrusion. 3. For the emergency version we have also introduced a new inverter. This inverter is encapsulated in resin and will be less susceptible to problems when installed in areas of high temperature.

Industrial Version 1. The same new enclosure introduced into the Zone 2 range. 2. A more robust industrial ballast with universal voltage from 110 to 254V. This will give better protection against high and low voltage fluctuations.

These changes have been introduced to bring the Sterling product range up to the very latest standards and also to improve the reliability of the product.

Detailed Product information and Technical Specifications can be found here.

Weidmuller ConnectPower Switch Power Supply

Weidmüller’s ConnectPower switch mode power supply units add reliability to your power supply.

Weidmuller High levels of efficiency as well as compact dimensions and moderate heat generation are distinguishing features of primary switch-mode power supplies. Weidmüller has single and three-phase primary switch-mode power supply units on offer in versions from 25 W to 1000 W. Their first-class price/performance ratio is a compelling benefit.

Depending on the model, the input voltage of the single and three-phase ConnectPower switch-mode power supplies is 115/230 V AC or 3 x 400 V AC. Under maximum load the units achieve efficiency ratings of up to 88 percent. They reduce harmonic currents through Power Factor Correction (PFC). In addition to this, the primary switch mode units are equipped with an integrated diagnostics and status output. An optional signalling contact is implemented as a changeover contact. Each device output is short-circuit proof by design. The 24 VDC output voltage can be adjusted via a potentiometer across a range of 24-28 VDC. The output is electronically limited to between 105-130 percent.

The units can easily be operated in parallel by using a special diode module to increase power capacity or for redundancy purposes. In this case, both switch-mode power supply units operate in parallel with the diode module and share the power drawn by the load. If one of the units should fail, the second unit provides the full amount of power required. The diode module decouples the two units 100 percent; that means that neither of the units can negatively affect the other if a fault occurs.

New Weidmuller Products Available

For the first time ever, Weidmuller is presenting a new gigabit-capable family of connectors with SteadyTec Technology for Industrial Ethernet. No crimping tools required!

Weidmuller The IE-Line stands for user friendly and easy handling. Without exception, all connectors with STEADYTEC technology are handled in the same manner and are assembled in next to no time. With IE-Line, assembly is simple – because it requires no tools and is therefore suitable for termination in the field. The IE-Line offers integrated Cat. 6 cable management as well as optimised IDC terminals (Insulation Displacement Connection) … simply insert the cable – squeeze together – that’s all it takes! The pre-assembled housings and inserts are quickly contacted and with less individual parts, it means fewer demands on time and fewer possibilities for making an error.

Marking is made using an industry-standard marking tag; this allows relevant information to be added directly to the connection housing and can be read at a single glance. Cable seal and strain relief in the IE-Line are accomplished by utilising a collet cage. The connector housing is slid over the cable and the cable clamp tightened, therefore everything is sealed immediately – and that also applies to thin cables. In addition, the IE-Line offers robust kink protection sleeves that prevent the cable from being bent too far. Practical experience has proven that the colour coding is a welcome assistant – these identification aids simplify structuring the individual network segments, making them child’s play.

In short, field termination in industrial environments often equates to inaccessible, dirty places, complicated handling or a plethora of components make it practically impossible to carry out fast, efficient work procedures in such surroundings. Not so with the IE-Line........Now users simply put together the pre-assembled components – without the need for special crimping tools!
